FC Bayern – Miasanrot Advent Calendar, Door 12: Sidney Lohmann

Justin Separator December 14, 2022

“Sydney is a world-class player, she is still so young, she will become one of the best in the world in her position.” You don’t need to know much more about Sydney Lohmann. Her coach Alexander Straus said this after FC Bayern’s 3-1 win against FC Barcelona. A historic moment. For the first time, the Bayern women won a match in the Allianz Arena.

In the middle of it all: Lohmann. The 22-year-old had just recovered from another injury. Against Barça, she was nevertheless the key to victory. “She can run all day and night,” Straus explained about the “machine”, as he called her: “She wins a lot of one-on-one duels defensively and offensively. In our game plan today, it was important to have a player like her on the field because she can break up tight situations with the ball.”

Sydney Lohmann stats overview

Especially in central midfield, there are often players who are either very physical and strong in duels or whose strengths are rather in the technical and strategic domains. Sarah Zadrazil, for example, is not known as a playmaker, but as an outstanding tackler and pressing machine. Lina Magull, on the other hand, has physical weaknesses, but is incredibly intelligent and technically very clean.

SYDNEY LOHMANN: A CHEAT CODE IN MIDFIELD

Lohmann, on the other hand, is simply a cheat code in midfield. She combines everything there is to have in midfield. Physique, intelligence, speed, technical quality, scoring threat – she is a complete player. There is almost nothing she cannot do.

She is a unique talent in German football. The way she made her offensive runs against FC Barcelona, currently the best team in the world, and almost never lost the ball – pure world class. On the one hand, the ball seems glued to her foot as if she had been born with it. On the other hand, opponents don’t manage to stop her even if using robust or even unfair means. She is an elemental force.

There are probably two key reasons why she does not often feature in the debate about Germany’s greatest talents anymore: She was injured too often and she can hardly be considered a talent any more because of her quality.

SYDNEY LOHMANN HAS THE POTENTIAL TO SHAPE GERMAN FOOTBALL

If she stays fit, she will leave her mark on German football. There is no doubt about that. There is a lot of talent in Germany – especially in attack. Klara Bühl and Jule Brand are among the best-known rising stars of recent years.

But none of them makes the right decisions on the pitch as reliably as Lohmann. At only 22 years of age, she gives observers the feeling that she has already seen everything in football. Her style of play, her whole manner and her charisma seem so mature and experienced. Lohmann has already reached the top of the world in terms of quality.

Her big challenge will be to stay fit. FC Bayern and the entire football world have had to do without her far too often. When Alexander Straus spoke about her after the Barça game, a special appreciation came through. That’s why he left no doubt about his prognosis. It’s not just that Lohmann can become one of the best players in the world, she certainly will. More than that, Bayern’s number 12 can become one of the faces of an entire generation.
