Round-Up & Link-List: FC Schalke 04

Dennis Separator September 7, 2016

Bayern have had some impressive runs against S04. Between 1967 and 1971 and from 2011 up until today Bayern won nine out of eleven games, drawing the remaining two. The longest undefeated streak dates back to 1984 to 1995. The record champion collected 13 wins and 7 draws during that period. Both teams first met each other in the Bundesliga on September 23rd in 1965. On the 10th match-day of the season they drew 1-1 at Schalke, after Dieter Koulmann put Bayern ahead 0-1. Manfred Kreuz scored the equalizer after a corner. A very memorable game took place on the 6th match-day in the 1973/74 season. After 18 minutes S04 was leading 3-0, but Bayern came back into the game. Thanks to four goals by Gerd Müller, the final score was a 5-5 draw, being the game with the most goals scored in the history of both teams.

When these two teams met, goals we always a given. Only in three out of 92 Bundesliga games the scoreboard didn’t change (1969, 1977, 2002). As mentioned above the last defeat to Schalke dates back to the DFB Pokal semi-final of 2011. Raul scored an early (and the only) goal after a corner. S04 advanced to the final and sailed past MSV Duisburg before lifting the trophy. In the most legendary duel of both teams, they didn’t even play on the same pitch. Nobody believed in a possible league title for Bayern when they trailed 0-1 in Hamburg while Schalke had already beaten Unterhaching 5-3 on the final match-day of the season in 2001. Schalke’s fans were already invading the pitch in the Parkstadion, because everyone believed the game in Hamburg was already over. But the record champions got one final chance. An indirect free kick in injury time. Oliver Kahn had to be held back, as he was willing to take things into his own hands (or rather feet). Patrik Anderson stepped up, found a non-existent hole between the HSV players and put the ball in the back of the net. 1-1. FC Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga title and all of Gelsenkirchen fell into each other’s arms for consolation.

Ancelotti and Guardiola

We and other blogs have already discussed the changes Ancelotti infused into Bayern’s style of play. In his article “Manager Motivations” Ed Smith gives an explanation on how four of the world’s best coaches differ in their inner motivation. On the short-list: Bayern’s ex-coach and their current one.

Portuguese predator

The signing of Renato Sanches has been a big surprise from the beginning and the buzz around the young kid has only grown bigger during the summer and his impressive performances on Portugal’s run to the European title. Nevertheless the discussions about his “true age” are often as important to the media as his actual footballing talent.

Kimmich as a kid

After Jerome Boateng, Joshua Kimmich is the second Bayern player featured on “The Player’s Tribune” where the players get the chance to present their very personal view on their life as a footballer, on and off the pitch.

Champions League chaos

Rostov are one of the surprising teams in this year’s Champions League competition. They do not lack good stories about how they came to their success and how they seem to fall apart in their moment of glory. The name “Berdyev” plays a central part in either story.

Continued Digital Transformation

This summer has been a busy time for the digital media and IT departments at FC Bayern. During the ICC and the US tour Bayern Munich were building their way into the fabric of the american soccer market. They relaunched their website, including upgrading their apps with a global mindset. And they took control of their IT landscap. Why? Because “Digital is the Gateway to Growth“.
